A SATELLITE-BASED 5G CELLULAR BACKHAUL TO REDUCE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE

Cloud Signals is a startup specialised in the development of space technologies based in Athens, Greece. In 2021 they were selected among the first incubatees of ESA BIC (Business Incubation Centre) Greece. The startup is developing a 5G cellular backhaul interface to provide, among others, maritime connectivity to passenger boats in the sea. GEO and LEO satellites are part of the trials that are currently being deployed with the largest mobile service operators in the country.

5G is currently a topic of high importance within the satellite and telecoms industries. Governments and private sector consider this technology as the means for the convergence of terrestrial and space-based assets, accelerating digital transformation and global coverage.

Space technologies were always important for telecommunications, although they used to be the “hard and expensive way” and were largely used by big broadcasting and telecom organisations. Nowadays, space technologies are reshaping our daily lives in many ways. Space applications are abolishing the terrestrial barrier and Cloud Signals is helping in this direction with its 5G cellular backhaul that will be launched in the market during 2023.

Cloud Signals aims to connect via 5G satellite network each and every remote area of the planet, minimising the under-connected and unconnected populations of the world and reducing the digital divide.
